Types of Acne Explained

1. Pimples (Papules & Pustules):
Pimples are red, inflamed bumps on the skin that may feel sore or tender. They occur when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, triggering an inflammatory response.

  • Papules are small, red, raised bumps without pus.
  • Pustules are similar but contain a white or yellow center filled with pus.
Both are common during hormonal shifts and can worsen if picked or squeezed.

2. Blackheads (Open Comedones):
Blackheads are small, dark spots that appear when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells but remain open at the surface. The dark appearance isn’t due to dirt—it’s the result of oxidation when the debris is exposed to air.

  • Commonly appear on the nose, forehead, and chin.
  • Best managed with gentle exfoliation and salicylic acid-based products.

3. Whiteheads (Closed Comedones):
Whiteheads form when a pore becomes clogged and closes over, trapping oil and dead skin inside. This creates a small, white bump beneath the skin’s surface.

  • Typically found on the face, especially around the cheeks and forehead.
  • Less inflamed than pimples but can lead to breakouts if not treated properly.

4. Cysts (Cystic Acne):
Cysts are large, deep, and painful lumps beneath the skin’s surface. They’re filled with pus and are often the result of severe inflammation or hormonal imbalance.

  • Cystic acne is the most severe type and can lead to scarring.
  • Requires medical treatment, such as prescription-strength topicals, oral medications, or dermatologist interventions.
